Why I Drive a Toyota Corolla

By Dave Morris, Toyota Certified Expert Sales Consultant

Ma-Ma-Ma-Ma-My Corolla!

As a salesperson for Toyota I often get asked what car I drive. Good question for me because I have two Toyotas, an 04 Prius with 160,000 miles (but thats a story for another time) and a new 2010 Corolla LE. With 20 years in the car business, selling for Chrysler, GM, Hyundai, Infinity, and now Toyota, I am always amazed at the effort the car companies put into telling you what awards they won for their new cars. Because my 20 years of car experience has taught me that the true award is seeing how many of these cars are still running after 15yrs. And let me tell you folks, there are many Corollas still on the road.

I first thought about buying a Corolla during the "Cash for Clunkers" frenzy. At first I wasn't too excited about the program because it felt like another "throw it out there" program. I had an 99 Oldsmobile Silhouette van with 250,000 miles on it (don't get too excited, it was on its second transmission, manifold, A/C was shot, etc.) and was ready for the junk yard.

As the program progressed, and people flocked into our store, we started to run out of Corollas! And here is why....we had family after family coming in with their 10-15 yr old Corollas, still running and being used, to try and use them for trades in the "Cash for Clunkers" program. However, even older Corollas had MPG ratings that were too good to qualify for the program.

"No problem" was the response most heard.

"No problem"?

".....Ya we'll just keep driving it until it dies, our third kid is going to college next year so we'll keep it for him. Thats right folks, we'll keep it."

So I bought one. A silver Corolla LE with power windows/locks, cruise control, I-Pod jack and more. And, I was lucky to get it.  The fact that the 2010's have 6 air-bags, ABS, and Vehicle Stability Control, means I'll be passing this one on to the first of three daughters next year. I'm also sure my 3rd daughter will have a safe, reliable Corolla to drive when she gets it around 2018.

The Corolla was the number 1 car bought with "Cash for Clunkers" trade-ins. Many were first-time Toyota buyers. Unfortunately I won't see these Corollas as trades for many years because the "frugal" fringe of America bought them for their dependability and reliability and now will be enjoying the car for many years.

I have mine, let me help you get yours!  If you have any Corolla questions - please feel free to call.
